Today was a full day of travel from Berlin to Wurzburg with a 2 hr. lunch stop. We got to the hotel and had 2 hours before dinner so went walking in this old town...and crossed a 500 year old bridge with elegant statues. We went into a Catholic church built for the archbishops who ruled this area over 1000 years ago. The church was magnificent. Tonight, after dinner...from 7:30--9:30 J and I and another guy and his sister went to the wine fest at the archbishops residence... The whole town must have been there...it was crowded and everyone was having a great time. We might have been the only americans! Tonight was the last night of a three night fest. The place we stopped for lunch today, Bayreuth, the place where Richard Wagner built his famous opera house in the 1700s was having a Bayreuth Burgerfeist, like a city street fair, and you could tell it was going to be a great event all weekend. We got there for lunch, when they were still setting up, and it was really an incredible town. To think that so much history went on here is incredible. Bayreuth has 70,000 inhabitants. And by the looks of things I think the whole town was turning out for the event. The Germans are certainly a festive bunch!
